Text 1
Why you"re more stressed by home than work(为什么你在家待着比上班压力更大)

Para1
①A new study suggests that contrary tomost surveys, people are actually more stressed at home than at work. ②Researchers measured people’s cortisol, which is stress marker, while they were at work and while they were at home and found it higher at what is supposed to be a place of refuge.
contrary to:与...相反。cortisol:n. refuge:n.
Para2
①“Further contradicting conventional wisdom, we found that women as well as men have lower levels of stress at work than at home,” writes one of the researchers, Sarah Damaske. ②In fact women even say they feel better at work, she notes, “It is men, not women, who report being happier at home than at work.” ③Another surprise is thatthe findings hold true for both those with children and without, but more so for nonparents. ④This is why people who work outside the home have better health.
这里的Further contradicting conventional wisdom“进一步矛盾”是相对于上文中people are actually more stressed at home than at work这个观点更加矛盾。contradict: [kntrdkt] vt. 和Another surprise is that 都属于进一步阐释发现的内容(与 conventional wisdom相反)。
Para3
①What the study doesn’t measure is whether people are still doing work when they’re at home, whether it is household work or work brought home from the office. ②For many men, the end of the workday is a time to kick back. ③For women who stay home, they never get to leave the office. ④And for women who work outside the home, they often are playing catch-up-with-household tasks. ⑤With the blurringof roles, and the fact that the home front lags well behind the workplace in making adjustments for working women, it’s not surprising that women are more stressed at home.
kick back:平静下来;放松一下playing catch-up-with-household tasks:play...tasks:完成... blur:v.[bl(r)] 使……模糊不清,变模糊lags well behind:远远落后于.... lag behind:落后 well:熟词僻意 在这里是 很;相当;大大地;远远地 的意思making adjustments for:为...
Para4
①But it’s not just a gender thing. ②At work, people pretty muchknow what they’re supposed to be doing: working, making money, doing the tasks they have to do in order to draw an income. ③The bargain is very pure: Employee puts in hours of physical or mental labor and employee draws out life-sustaining moola.
a gender thing:性别问题pretty much:几乎;相当;很draw an income:获得收入puts in 和 draws out 是一组反义词组。put in:投入;draw out:拿到;收获。 moola: ["mulɑ] n.
Para5
①On the home front, however, people have no such clarity. ②Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clinicallyand methodically laid out. ③There are a lot of tasks to be done, there are inadequate rewards for most of them. ④Your home colleagues—your family—have no clear rewards for their labor; they need to be talked into it, or if they’re teenagers, threatened with complete removal of all electronic devices. ⑤Plus, they’re your family. ⑥You cannot fire your family. ⑦You never really get to go home from home.
On the ... front:在..里/方面Rare is the household.... 这句话要是按照正常语序说是:the division of labor is so clinically and methodically laid out in the household is rare。clinically:adv. [mθdkli] 有方法地;有条不紊地laid out:安排;陈列be talked into:被说服(去做某事)removal:n.
Para6
①So it’s not surprising that people are more stressed at home. ②Not only are the tasks apparently infinite, the co-workers are much harder tomotivate.
apparently:adv. [mtvet] v. He is motivated entirely by self-interest.
