这两个貌似不起眼的小短语所表达的境界可要小心，也就是说，同样是在bar的后面，多一个the或少一个the，又有不同的上下文时，一个人的境遇可是天壤之别。不过，一般我们讲过强调一下，练习一下就不会再搞混。
（be put） behind bars： 身陷囹圄，关进铁窗; 在押，坐牢。英文解释是To be arrested and held in prison; to be serving time in prison. 注意，这里的bar本义是指金属棒、铁条之内的物品，牢房的铁条可不只一根，所以用复数很自然。behind bars与in jail可互换，但前者比较口语化, 比较形象。
1. I hear Mike"s uncle has been put behind bars again. 我听说麦克的叔叔又被抓起来了。
2. I wonder what he did this time! Sir, I"m afraid your son has been put behind bars on a charge of drunk driving. 我奇怪他这次干了啥！ 先生，恐怕你儿子被关是由于醉驾了。
下面这句是多少同学背诵并印象深刻的经典句子，只是有些可能不知是在哪本书的哪一课了。
3. The curtain went up on the final act of the play and revealed the aristocrat sitting alone behind bars in his dark cell. 大幕拉开，最后一幕戏开演，该贵族独自一人坐在铁窗后阴暗的牢房里。 (《新概念英语第三册》第22课《By Heart背诵》)
behind the bar: 吧台之后。注意这里的bar不是指酒吧本身，而是里面向顾客提供服务的长条桌吧台，a long narrow table or flat surface at which customers are served。
1. The man polished glasses behind the bar. 那名男服务员在吧台后擦拭着杯子。
2. The man behind the bar wondered why Peter didn’t ask for one big glass instead of two small ones. 吧台后的人心里好奇为什么彼得为什么不要一杯大的代替两小杯。
上面两句明白了，barman一词就一目了然了，相当于美语的bartender。
3. She tipped the barmen 10 dollars and bought drinks all round. 她给了吧台服务员10美元小费，还请在场的所有人喝了酒。
