正确地使用动词时态是英文写作的基本功，如不能正确选用时态，就会出现“broken English”改变文章所要表达的意思，从而影响评审专家与读者的理解。

一般情况下，学术论文的基本框架结构包括：摘要（Abstract）、概述（Introduction）、材料与方法（Materials and Methods） 、结果（Results）、讨论（Discussion）和结论（Conclusion） 这六个部分。每一部分所对应的内容想必大家都有所了解了，今天就一些规律性问题做下探讨。
一、摘要（Abstract）。这部分通常是指你未公布的结果，要使用过去时态。
二、概述（Introduction）。概述包括研究背景，通常是一个学科中公认的事实。需要解释为什么你报告的研究是重要的。这部分通常使用现在时。例如：
Genomics providescrucial information for rational drug design.
你需要参考与你文章相关的研究，你需要仔细的选择正确的时态来说明对你正在做的研究的看法。
当你使用现在时时，你是在向读者表明，你相信你的研究结果仍然是真实并且相关的，尽管不久之前的已经进行过实验研究。例如：
Many of the lakes and wetlands in the region are located in craters or valleys blocked by early Pliocene lava flows (Ollier & Joyce, 1964).
用现在完成时写之前的研究
如果你在介绍部分使用现在完成时来引用之前的研究时，你可能会谈到“近因”。近因可能是正近因（认为以前的研究已经建立了坚实的研究基础）也可能是负近因（之前没有相关的或有效的研究）。

图表和图形描述用现在时
If you use figures or diagrams to help explain what you did, refer to the figure or diagram using the present tense. Examples:
如果你使用图表来解释你所做的事，需要用现在时来引用该图表。例如：
Table 1 above demonstratesthe success of cloning in various animal species.
Figure 2 below shows methylation in mouse 2-cell embryos.
四、结果（Results）。在描述结果部分，使用过去时态来详细说明你获得的结果。例如：
Overall, more than 70% of the insects collected were non-phytophagous.
Results indicatedthat prolonged exposure to ultra-violet radiation had a positive correlation with the development of melanomas.
Following activation of NT oocytes with strontium, the cell cycle resumedin both groups.
用现在时来描述数字、表格和图表
根据前面章节中提到的，当你描述数字、表格和图表时使用现在时。
Examples: Figure 1 displaysthe comparative variation in the morphology of donor chromatin in both age groups of oocytes.
Table 1 below shows the stream flows calculated for each stream using Equation 1.
五、讨论（Discussion）。在讨论部分，你需要坚实结果的重要性，通常使用现在时。例如：
Removal of vegetation for agricultural purposes appears to negatively affect the water quality of streams.
用过去时态总结发现，用现在时态解释结果
作者可以使用过去时态来总结他们的发现，结合现在时态来解释结果或结果的含义。例如：
As the maxima and minima did not correspond to high and low tides, it is possible that the patterns observed may not be the result of mixing of waters with different concentrations.
Leaf carbon and phenolic content did not differ across sites, indicatingthat the response of secondary plant chemicals such as phenolics to water is complex.

Although the study foundevidence of tillage and irrigation within the study area, from the data collected it was not possible to determine if the effects of agriculture upstream cause (or caused) higher levels of total nitrogen downstream.
