One man stayed at the wheel while two others with black stocking over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars. While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs. He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window. Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade.
一人留在驾驶座上，另外两个用黑色长筒丝袜蒙面的人跳下车来。他们用铁棒把商店橱窗的玻璃砸碎。这开始发生时，泰勒先生正在楼上。他与店员动手向窗外投掷家具，椅子，桌子飞落花流水在拱廊街上。
（1）while引导的时间状语从句
While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs.
while作“当…时”讲，连接一个时间状语，表示主句和从句中的两个动作同时发生。并且还表示从句的动作发生时间比从句长，也就是说，从句的动作是个大背景。
You can tell me your opinion while we are eating. 你可以在我们吃饭时把你的意见告诉我。
有时为了方便起见，可以省略掉相同的主语。
Water is getting hotter and hotter while (it is) heated.水被加热时变得越来越热。
（2）while和when在引导时间状语从句时的区别
①while表示主句和从句的动作同时发生，但when可表示同时发生，也可表示相继发生。
When I was walking, I noticed a car in front of the shop. 我走路时注意到一辆车停在商店前。
②while从句可在主句前或后，when必须是主句后。
There will be a meeting tomorrow, when he will express his views on these subjects. 明天有会，那时他将就这些课题表示自己的看法。
在这个句子中，明天会议开始后，他会发表看法，when相当于and then的用法。
（3）-ing作伴随状语
Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade.
这个句子的谓语本可用went into即可，但当作者加上flying的动名词后，修饰了went的状态，显得更加形像和有画面感。
