学会一个习语最好是在一个过目不忘的语境中。今天外网上一篇报道有点意思。说是新西兰一地方议会建议把猫逐步赶尽杀绝，于是用一个习语写出一个吸睛的标题 Puss gets the boot。但细看正文的长标题却是New Zealand council proposes banning all cats。于是，你至少八九不离十地懂这个习语的意思了。猫在新西兰属外来物种，因有爱攻击本土禽类的倾向而引人反感。
get the boot, 也可以说成be given the boot，具有被动色彩，to be fired, to have one"s romantic partner end the relationship with one; to be broken up with.
